SeaPerch Simulator (Video game)

SeaPerch Simulator (Video game)

Flying an underwater ROV (Remotely Opeated Vehicle) is like playing a First Person game.  Your only view of the world is via a video camera mounted to the robot.  So, why not create a game that lets you fly a SeaPerch ROV?   Technically, it would be a SeaPerch Simulator.

That's what one of my students (Kendrick) did.  He used an animation/gaming package called Blender, and created a virtual environment that you can explore with a virtual SeaPerch.

You can download his game (called SimPerch) from this link:

http://www.gearsinc.org/downloads/Simperch3.0-Setup.exe

It's 29MB, so make sure you have a fast connection.  Once you have downloaded it, run it, to install the program.

It runs on Windows XP and Vista.  Make sure you read the Help Screen to learn how to fly the ROV.

There's currently one game/mission, with three levels (fly through the hoops), but new missions are being added as I type.

Have fun...

This is great Phil! We would love to add this to the site and feature it. What do you think?

"simperch" 3.2 is on its way! i am building it mostly with scripts this time in order to let it run on lower end computers. currently 3.2 has the menu, and the basic programming levels, also i am working on adding a "builder" so that players can either virtualy build the seaperch ROV or build there own custom ROV. the first beta build of 3.2 should be available by mid-november.

Just found this game now, and I think I gonna like, it, simulation games like this one of my interest. I am also looking for the air pilot simulation game, I don't know where I could find it. Anyway, this game would be a help for me, its a sort of more than a physics games, and I am looking to play games similar to this one if you have next game developed.

I downloaded and tried the game, it's actually cool, but I thought it was just like a visible ROV game scene underwater, just like simulating underwater movement. Anyway, still a good one to start perhaps.

Is the source code for this available? (Or would you be interested in making it so?)

I would love to modify it to add some more features, eg a "pool side" view, modelling cable drag and a few other ideas.

Does this simulate the orb challenge or obstacle challenge?

This is wonderful!!  Thank you for sharing this with all of us!!
